B of the Bang: RIP

It's impossible not to become sycophantic in expressing our awe for Mr Heatherwick's genius, and we're very grateful for his kind permission in reproducing an image of the wonderous B of the Bang.

The 56-metre structure was commissioned as monument to the 2002 Commonwealth Games and, in his own words, 'celebrates the dynamism and explosiveness of physical activity'. The structure was made up of 180 steel spikes, was as tall as the Leaning Tower of Pisa and leant ten times as much.

A magnificent landmark for the area, the B of the Bang formed the main gateway to the new City of Manchester Stadium.

Unfortunately, after a short, controversial life the structure was dismantled in 2009 following engineering difficulties - for shame!

As such, B of the Bang becomes the first of our RIP range - gone but not forgotten.
